about

This album (Persevere) has been a year and a half in the making. I quite literally had to persevere to complete it. The concept of Persevere is exactly that, to overcome all obstacles and keep thriving no matter what the challenges may be. This is the story I wanted to share this time around to inspire all of those who struggle with the hardships of life. I also wanted to make this project totally solo, with just my vocals and production, as well as, the mixing and mastering, and the album art. The previous version of this LP was mixed and mastered by Ezza of Choom Gang, but I wanted to do the entire project myself and it has been sitting with me for a year eating at me to actually do the mixing and mastering myself. So I did just that on this new version of the LP. Enjoy!

I also haven't made a song since 2012 and had planned on never making a rap song ever again. That changed, however, when I met and started working with Ase Mor The Corner Store Rapper. He shared his crew's music with me and specifically an MC named ES, and his album We Are Only Getting Older. His beliefs and talent inspired me to continue to make music no matter how old I get, that really got me inspired to get back on the microphone. I have another release that arrived earlier this year with my group Hydra Gwaii (Pot C and DJ Hotwings/Cheese), called The Elements Of Fire, and you can find that killer release @ blocsonic.com/releases/hydra-gwaii/the-elements-of-fire.

Another aspect for this album was to tell my journey to becoming a stronger, healthier person. I wanted to translate some of the actual things that I did in order to truly love and care for myself. Also I wanted to make an album that was more positive without being corny, which was a challenge because I didn't know how. Many of the projects I made before were homages to artists that I loved/love and listened to, so with this one I had to find my own voice. I started with my journey into my darkness with the song Exactly What We Need (I re-recorded the entire track recently) and went from there to tell a full story from the successes and failures I had experienced throughout this journey that I started fourteen years ago.

At times during the pandemic I found it hard to be positive in any circumstance, so the music was created slowly, and written when inspiration hit, I didn't force anything to happen. I had other songs that didn't make the cut, and other beats that I wanted to use, but these twelve tracks here I feel encompass the message I wanted to convey. I wanted to be lyrical, I wanted to say something that had meaning, and I wanted people to feel like they could dance along with me on my journey. It was important to me that the sequence of the album could flow from start to finish, then go right back to the beginning for repeated listens, without being jarring. So I have to say that I have never put so much time into a project before and I believe it shows throughout its duration in quality, strength, and replay-ability. Putting my story into an album was a great experience and I hope you all enjoy thoroughly and feel the message I am conveying.

Musically, the album is inspired by Dr. Dre, Parliament, Snoop Dogg, DJ Battle Cat, Daz Dillinger, E-40, E-A-Ski, and all the west coast artists that came up in California. I've always wanted to make an LP with G-Funk type beats. I wanted it to be as funky and groovy as possible. With my own personal flair and touch. I created dozens of beats and used some older beats I created in the past and chose what I thought was the best of my productions. I also wanted beats that worked well together in the sequence of the album, and I believe this is some of the best work I have ever done. I would say this album is my personal best project that I have done. It was created with topics that are close to my heart and left me feeling vulnerable, but I am looking forward to sharing it with all of you.

I look forward to your responses and thank you all for your time, the purchase, and listening.

Aight Peace!
